What is an Ice Dam Blaster? (TM)
It is the low-cost, simple solution to prevent damage caused by ice dams.
The Ice Dam Blaster TM is a sleeve filled with deicer material that is long-lasting and won't damage the roof or its components (including roofing nails, shingles, gutters and down spouts). In addition, the run-off will not damage turf, shrubs, flower beds, or concrete at the bottom of the down spout.
The key is to melt an outlet through an ice dam, by placing the Ice Dam Blaster TM in strategic locations, to allow the water to run through the outlet and into the gutters and downspouts that will open because of the deicing material. Ice Dam Blasters TM should be placed on the roof, one to two feet above the gutter, at the farthest point away from the downspout (in order to keep the gutter clear), and approximately every 20 feet. It is a good idea to place an Ice Dam Blaster TM in valleys where a lot of water runs to the gutters. Gutters and downspouts should be clear of leaves and debris in order to allow for the ice dam blaster to work properly.
Under "typical" winter conditions the sleeves should be placed on the roof after the late Fall rainy season is over and as early during the Winter season as possible to prevent ice dam water back-up. The Ice Dam Blaster TM should last for the entire winter season, however it may need to be replaced if enough moisture occurs to empty the sleeve. When the sleeve is empty it will usually blow to the ground, so you may not need to climb up to get it.

Ice Dam First Response
It's like Drano (TM) for your gutter!
Freezes at 76 below zero
Pour about 1 cup of Ice Dam First Response into the pooled water and within several minutes, there will be a channel defrosted and the water will begin to move down the gutter and work it's way into the downspout. Be sure to use enough and follow with Ice Dam Attack granular roof deicer. Don't worry, this is 100% non-corrosive for any building component.
Because the Ice Dam First response is heavier than water, the liquid will flow underneath the ice and create a channel between the gutter and ice. Think of it this way - as the product has a freezing point of -76 degrees, it's almost like you are taking a torch to the gutter!
Ice Dam Attack
Sprinkle some granular Ice Dam Attack or Ice Dam Remover Granular Pellets in several places on the ice as well. It is not as fast acting as the Ice Dam First Response (TM), but will work to burn down a path for the water to escape and exit through the downspout. Non-corrosive and safe for vegetation and pets. Helps to keep gutters open and prevent future water backups into the structure.

Made from Sodium Acetate - 100% non-corrosive, certified for runway deicing where there can be zero tolerance for corrsion to aircraft. In it's liquid form this freezes at 76 below, so it is very effective.
Simply scoop out about a coffee cup full and place in a row across the width of the gutter. Place these "piles" every 2 to 4 feet. After several hours to a day, the pellets will bury down leaving a gap between ice chunks. You can then lift out sections of the ice dam leaving room for the Ice Dam Blaster. You could also place some above frozen valleys, above the downspout cutout in the gutter to help keep that open too.

Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is a deicer and can be used as an alternative to road salt. It is approximately as corrosive as normal tap water, and in varying concentrations can be effective in stopping road ice from forming down to around -27.5 °C (-17.5 °F) (its eutectic temperature.) CMA is produced from a reaction of a magnesium/calcium compound with glacial acetic acid. (vinegar compounds) It is reacted with dolomite or dolomitic lime, to produce CMA.
Lowest corrosion product of anything on the market, even is good for vegetation! Salt and calcium chloride is corrosive and can damage the hardware that holds it together.
CMA is a bit unique, it does not produce your typical brine that flows across the surface. Rather, it stays fairly close to where you put it, so you need to spread it as evenly as you can, but sparingly. CMA lasts a long time because it does not run off. Therefore it builds up with subsequent applications, so less and less is needed over time. It is 100% biodegradeable, over 50 degrees for it to break down. Being vey light weight, it does not take a lot do get the job done.
Salt or chloride-based products are corrosive to metal and you can put your entire family at risk if you put salt on the deck. It's hard on the wood but you are inviting disaster from corroded joist hangers, nails, screws etc. Worse yet, there could be electrical conduits or gas pipes running below, out of sight until it's too late. There have been several cases of decks collapsing from using salt. If you have used salt in the past, have your deck inspected for any signs of corrosion and make recommended repairs.
Not only will this melt the snow and ice, it also provides anti-stick properties. Ice and snow do not readily bond so removal is easy. No more corrosive than tap water! See the article at Wikipedia here

I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that the Half As Much Green Earth Ice Melter has been working great! We recently had a severe ice sleet storm here and, in addition to that, the temps fell quickly after the sleet/ice buildup came. I used the Half As Much Green Earth Salt on my two facilities as I always do because they request it and normal bulk rock salt on all my other lots. I had to salt some of my lots 3-4 times with the normal rock salt however the Half As Much Green Earth salt only took 2 times to get my lots spotless. Now mind you the temps by this point were down in the low teens.
In addition I am using half the amount of Half As Much Green Earth salt per treatment as I am with standard rock salt. One of my test lots requires about 800 lbs of rock salt per application, and per your recommendations, I only applied 400 lbs. It worked faster and cleared the lot equally well. Half As Much Green Earth salt is saving us time, product and money that is for sure. I am very happy with this product and we will be ordering more from you in the next couple days.
